A BUHERA man will know his fate today when a Rusape magistrate passes judgment in a case in which he is accused of raping his 12-year-old niece and infecting her with HIV virus. The man, whose name has been withheld to protect the minor, lives in Murairwa Village under Chief Nyashanu. Prosecuting, Mr Tirivanhu Mutyasira alleges that sometime in September last year, the 45-year-old man was staying with his niece at his homestead in Murairwa Village.

It is said on the first day he allegedly raped his niece, he called the young girl into the bedroom and ordered her to sweep the room. Reports are that the man then sent another relative to fetch water from the borehole. Further accusations are that he then closed the door from inside and ordered the Grade 6 pupil to undress. The court heard that the girl refused to undress, which prompted her uncle to forciblyy remove her clothes. He then allegedly raped and threatened to give the young girl a thorough hiding in the event that she revealed the sexual attack to anyone.

It is said that the girl later revealed the ordeal to a relative who failed to take action out of fear of their uncle. The man is also alleged to have raped his brother’s other 17-year-old daughter after returning home drunk. On the day in question, he is said to have returned from the beerhall at around 10pm and found his brother’s daughter fast asleep. Reports are that he sneaked into her blankets and started caressing her.

The court heard that the accused threatened to chase her away in the event that she resisted his sexual advances. All the sexual attacks came to light after the 12-year-old niece informed her mother about the abuses. He was then arrested and taken to court charged with two counts of rape. Meanwhile, Anesu Kurebwaseka reports that a 32- year-old Chimanimani man, Edmore Matsekete, committed suicide following pressure from people who allegedly accused him of raping a 10- year-old girl.

Police have confirmed the incident.

“The deceased person was facing accusations from fellow villagers that he raped a 10 year-old girl on November 5, in Mukangara Village under Chief Mutambara in Chimanimani,” said police deputy public relations officer Assistant Inspector Luckson Chananda. According to the information available, said Asst Insp Chananda, the now deceased went missing after the allegations and could not be located, as fellow villagers tried to reach out to him. Another villager, Samuel Chakambedzi (62), went to Matsekete’s home in search of him. When he knocked on the door, there was no reply and he had to break down the door to gain entry.

“That is when he found the deceased person hanging from the roof beam of his house, his body already decomposing,” added Asst Insp Chananda. Asst Insp Chananda said that people should not see death as the ultimate solution to their problems. People believe that by killing themselves the problem disappears but they should learn to solve conflicts amicably. In addition, people should not just point fingers at someone without concrete proof,” he added.
