A 26-YEAR-OLD man from Beatrice on Monday committed suicide following a dispute with his father over beer. Acting Mashonaland East Provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nobert Muzondo confirmed the incident. “We received a report following the death of Andrew Manyunguma of Plot 16 Nyarakuru Farm who drank poison following a misunderstanding with his father Moses Munyunguma over his beer that he had drunk. Investigations into the matter are underway,” he said.

It is alleged that on November 11 at around 5am the senior Munyunguma sent Andrew to Albion Farm beer- hall to buy 5 litres of opaque beer.

Andrew proceeded to the beerhall and bought the required beer but drank three litres on his way home.
A police report indicated that when Andrew returned to the homestead he was left with only two litres.

This angered Moses who started scolding Andrew, who then packed all his belongings and burnt them.
It is alleged that at around 8pm Moses and Andrew retired to bed in separate bedrooms.

The following morning it is reported that Andrew woke up and told Shepherd Mashiri (33), who is employed as general hand at their farm, that he had poisoned the opaque beer using a tobacco herbicide.

It is alleged that Andrew drank the poisoned beer and suddenly fell unconscious while frothing on the mouth.
He was rushed to Beatrice Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The matter was reported at Beatrice Police Station who attended the scene and took the body to Chitungwiza Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

Asst Insp Muzondo appealed to members of the public to seek amicable ways of solving their disputes rather than taking their own lives.
