A Harare man is battling for his life at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals after he was brutally stoned by his fellow colleague for refusing to give him cigarettes.

Lovemore Kanyi (19) was facing assault charges when he appeared before magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe.

He was remanded in custody to August 10 for trial.

The prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa had earlier on opposed bail arguing that the victim was still admitted at the hospital.

Allegations are that on July 16, at around 5pm at Parirenyatwa Hospitals, the complainant was approached by Kanyi, who asked for cigarettes from him.

The court heard that the complainant told Kanyi that he had no cigarettes.

It is alleged that this infuriated Kanyi, who then started assaulting the complainant using a wooden log.

It is further alleged that Kanyi picked stones and started stoning the complainant three times on the head, causing life threatening injuries on the head and fractured his right arm.
