ZIMBABWE striker Rutendo “Madzimai” Makore says while breaking the COSAFA Women Championships goal-scoring record will be good, winning the tournament was more important.

The big forward has scored nine goals in four matches to help the Mighty Warriors reach the final where they take on Banyana Banyana tomorrow at Barbourfields. “I want to help my country retain the trophy and I just have faith in the Almighty God whom I feel will guide us all the way to the winner’s podium,’’ she said.

“I also want to beat the record and I am hoping that I will be able to score four goals against South Africa. I am just putting everything in the hands of the Lord and I urge all the fans to come and rally behind us.

“It is not going to be easy but we have to believe in ourselves, believe in the team, in the technical team.’’

The striker could have scored a hattrick against Kenya but the goalkeeper Poline Atieno Owino denied her twice from close range.

Noko Matlou of South Africa is the record holder with 12 goals she scored in the 2008 edition of the tournament.

Zimbabwean striker Rufaro Machingura scored eight goals in 2011.

Talent Mandaza, the Zimbabwe captain, said they won’t let the nation down. ‘‘It was through the intervention of the Almighty God that we qualified as the runners-up from all the three groups and at one point we were forced to support Kenya when they played against Swaziland.

“This is our time to redeem ourselves and we are not going to let the nation down. We just need support like what happened against Kenya on Thursday and we will deliver.

“I am proud to be Zimbabwean so is everyone in the team who is wearing the Zimbabwean jersey. We will not let our technical team and the nation down.

‘‘I just want everyone to pray and rally behind us,” she said.
