Harare City Council Town Clerk Dr Tendai Mahachi will know his fate today when the Local Government Board is expected to decide on mayor Clr Bernard Manyenyeni’s decision to send him on forced leave.

Clr Manyenyeni sent Dr Mahachi on the forced leave without a council resolution.

He accused Dr Mahachi of stalling the city’s succession plan for directors and rationalisation of executive salaries.

Local Government, Public Works and National Housing principal director (urban local authorities) Ms Erica Jones yesterday said since it was a human resources matter relating to senior management, she has since submitted a copy of the letter given to Dr Mahachi to the Local Government Board for its advice.

“I have been informed that the Mayor of Harare, Clr Manyenyeni, at the council meeting of the City of Harare on 30 June 2015, announced that he had sent the Town Clerk Dr Mahachi on ‘forced leave’ with immediate effect, for an indefinite period on full pay,” she said.

“On hearing of the issue, I requested the mayor to submit a report on the matter and as of yet, I have not been furnished with same.”

This is not the first time the pair has clashed as in February last year Clr Manyenyeni suspended Dr Mahachi for a period of three months after he failed to provide the salary and benefits schedule of all Harare City Council senior employees, including his own. Recently Local Government, Public Works and National Housing Minister Dr Chombo summoned the pair to try and mend their relations.
