THE term of office of the current executive committee of the Zimbabwe Handball Federation has expired and the organisation is expected to hold its elections to elect new office bearers on March 31, 2015.
Amon Madzvamuse, the outgoing ZHF president, confirmed this yesterday and he indicated that he will be seeking re-election as the leader of the country’s handball mother body, the post that he took over from Agrippah Sora in 2012.

“We are going to hold elections on March 31 2015 to elect a substantive executive committee because the term of office of the current ZHF leadership expired on August 10 this year. So we need to elect new office bearers and I’ve already tossed my hat into the ring and I’m going to stand for re-election as the ZHF president.

“And I’m also calling upon all members of the Zimbabwean handball family, from the current executive committee members, former leaders and former players, to all come on board and seek to be elected to different positions or posts in the new executive committee because we need to formulate one formidable executive committee which will take us to the Promised Land,” Ma- dzvamuse said.

The former ZHF chief executive said they have a lot of international commitments coming up in the next couple of years hence the need to have a strong and an experienced executive committee in place.

“GeBe Foundation of Germany have indicated that they would like to enter into a partnership with ZHF which will see promising young Zimbabwean handball players and coaches going to Germany for attachments and training courses there.

“A leading Japanese sports goods manufacturer, Mikasa Corporation, has also indicated that it would like to be our partners in the development of handball in Zimbabwe and we couldn’t sign any memorandum of agreement with them since our term of office was about to expire.

“So, we can only enter into partnerships with GeBe Foundation and Mikasa Corporation once we have a substantive executive committee in place and we need experienced people (in the new executive committee) to deal with these people,” Madzvamuse said.

He also said that if he is eventually re-elected as the leader of the federation for a second term, he would strive to make handball one of the popular sporting disciplines in this country.

“The main task is always to first have a strong junior development programme and then come up with good structures that will see us having a proper club system throughout the country. We want to spread the sport to all the four corners of the country and we can achieve this if all the stakeholders, including our sponsors, work as a unit,” Ma- dzvamuse said.

The ZHF boss also called upon what he called “fence-sitters or armchair critics” to come on board and help in the development of handball in this country.
“We have a lot of people who are fond of complaining or criticising the current ZHF executive committee but they are not coming forward to say exactly or point out where we are going wrong. I would like to urge all these people to come on board and help shape the future of handball in Zimbabwe instead of sitting on the fence.

“We have six months in which to prepare for our elections for a substantive executive committee and I think this is ample time for people to campaign and also identify proper candidates who will fight for the executive posts in the new set-up at ZHF.”

Madzvamuse took over the hot seat at ZHF in November 2012 after Sora stepped down as president of the federation following the expiry of his four-year term in office.
Sora is now the headmaster at Prince Edward School in Harare and his four-year term in the office at ZHF ended in September 2012 and this saw Madzvamuse being catapulted to head the federation for the past two years.

And during the two years under the leadership of Madzvamuse and his secretary-general, Alphios Magiya, the ZHF successfully managed to send Zimbabwean teams to take part in the Partille Cup in Gothenburg, Sweden, in 2013 and this year.

The Partille Cup is the world’s biggest annual tournament in handball in terms of number of participants. The tournament is played every year during one week in July by young people in the ages between 10 and 21 years old.

And Zimbabwe have now become a regular feature at this tournament which gives young handball players the much-needed international exposure, thanks to the wise leadership of Madzvamuse and Magiya.

Handball has of late become popular in Zimbabwean schools, especially at high school level, and the Girls High School in Harare, through their headmistress, Beauty Mutsambiwa, are leading the way in popularising the sport in this country.

Meanwhile, Madzvamuse said they are going to hold a Presidential Trophy tournament on October 25 and 26 in Harare where six foreign teams from Mozambique, South Africa and Zambia are expected to feature.

“We are going to hold the Presidential Trophy tournament in three weeks’ time and Mozambique have already confirmed their participation and they will be bringing four teams. Zambia have also indicated that they will be bringing four teams and South Africa two.

“All the teams that are currently taking part in our Handball Premier League and all those who could not take part in this league because of financial constraints are all invited to take part in this tournament.”

All in all, Madzvamuse said, they are looking at having 40 teams competing at this tournament which will either be played at Prince Edward School or Houghton Park Primary School in Harare.
