INDEBTED Chitungwiza residents have continued to ignore council’s call to engage them in crafting payment plans to settle their debts, raising expectations the municipality will be forced to engage the services of a debt collector.

It has emerged that only 3 032 ratepayers out of 55 000 who owe Chitungwiza have heeded the call to engage the authorities. Residents and businesses owe the municipality more than $62 million. Though council initially invited debtors for negotiations between August and September, it later extended the deadline to today. As of yesterday, anxious residents flooded the local authority’s offices ahead of the cut-off date. Chitungwiza finance director Mrs Evangelista Machona told The Herald that the engagement of a debt collector was now inevitable.
