ZIMBABWE’S top seed Benjamin Lock had another good outing yesterday when he stormed into the finals of the Old Mutual IT Futures Series tennis tournament after beating Hugo Nys 6-4, 6-3 in the semi-finals at Harare Sports Club. Lock, whose best performance at the same event last year was the semi-finals, went a step further at the ongoing event to secure a place for himself in the finals this morning.

Lock will take on Australia’s Marc Polmans in the final.

Polmans seeded fourth beat Michael Grant 7-6(6), 6-3 in the other semi-final tie yesterday.

Following his victory in the singles, Benjamin would have hoped to complete the task yesterday with another positive result in the doubles with his young brother Courtney.

But Nys, who lost to Benjamin in the semi-final, and his partner Andrea Vavassori, turned the tables in their favour as they beat the Lock brothers 6-3, 6-3 to clinch the title for the first tournament of the three events running up to July 10.

The two brothers will have to wait for the second tournament starting on Monday to see if they can claim their second doubles title in the futures events having won their first title together in Mozambique recently.

However, despite losing in the doubles they have had some good moments this week and for Benjamin a win today will be icing on the cake.

Other players who have been taking part in the tournament are Mark Fynn, Tadiwa Chinamo, Muzingaye Sibanda and Miracle Matanga.

Most of them lost in the early rounds of the event while Fynn reached the doubles semi-finals with his partner Franco Feitt.

Some of the players such as Fynn, Chinamo, Courtney and Benjamin are also using the three tournaments to prepare for the Davis Cup tie against Georgia on July 15 to 17.
