ZIMBABWE’S Courtney Lock caused one of the major upsets at the on-going Zimbabwe F1 Futures ITF men’s circuit tennis tournament when he beat second seed Arthur Surreaux of France in the first round at Harare Sports Club yesterday.

The unseeded Lock posted a straightforward 6-1, 6-4 victory over the Frenchman to pull through to the second round where he will be joined by his brother Benjamin who was also in action yesterday.

Courtney was all smiles after he earned his first professional circuit points with yesterday’s victory over Surreaux.

“It’s great to beat someone ranked around 500 in the world rankings but I have been working really hard,” Courtney, who is based in the United States, said.

“I am happy with the way I played today and I enjoy playing at home. I have been working hard in the US with my coach. I just went for the net and stood my ground and it worked well.”

Courtney will now face the winner between William Bushumuka of the United States and South Africa’s Lloyd Harris.

His brother, Benjamin, who is Zimbabwe’s top-ranked player, rallied to beat Samuel Bothwell of Ireland 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Benjamin, who won the Mozambique Features F1 Futures circuit last weekend, was delighted with his show.

“It was a good game under different conditions here in Zimbabwe. I am working hard to try and be quicker.

“He (Bothwell) had a good chance in the first set, which he took, and I just had to find a way to win so that I could look forward to the next day.”

In the doubles, Zimbabwe’s Brandon Levendale and Thomas Gerini of Argentina got the better of South Africans Lloyd Harris and Nicolas Scholtz 6-4, 6-2.
