LONDON. — Liverpool have sacked manager Brendan Rodgers with immediate effect. The Reds drew 1-1 with Everton yesterday to leave them 10th in the English Premier League and six points off the top spot.

“Although this has been a difficult decision, we believe it provides us with the best opportunity for success on the pitch,” said a club statement.

“The search for a new manager is underway and we hope to make an appointment in a decisive and timely manner.”

Rodgers had earlier vowed to stay at the club for as long as he is asked following his side’s 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby.

Danny Ings gave Liverpool the lead before Romelu Lukaku equalised for Everton just before half-time. That was how it finished meaning Liverpool stay in 10th, a point behind their neighbours.

The pressure has been on Rodgers in recent weeks with Liverpool now having won just once in their last nine games but the Northern Irishman insisted he is not concerned before he was sacked yesterday. — BBC Sport.
