AS the curtain came down on the Copa Coca-Cola boys Under-16 and Girls Under-17 football tournament at the weekend, Harare City assistant coach Mkhupali Masuku believes there is need for participants to focus on development instead of just winning. This year’s tournament was held in Gwanda with Rujeko clinching the boys title while Chidyamakono proved to be the dominating team in the girls section as they were crowned champions for the fourth consecutive year.

Masuku, who graced the event in Gwanda, said there was a noticeable improvement in the girls’ competition, but expressed concern over the boys competition as he noted that the focus seems to be more on wanting to win instead of development.

“I think from the games I watched, especially the girls, there is much improvement in terms of their general performance, which to me is good going forward for our girl child. “It’s quite exciting and there isn’t a lot of age-cheating from the girls.

“But if you look at the boys side, so far so good I think. But I think we have to take away that mentality of always wanting to win. If we look at the development side of it, I think we will go a long way.

“And thanks to Coca-Cola for always improving our junior development in Zimbabwe and schools need to also employ professional coaches to help teachers,” said Masuku.
