Trade Unions are seeking audience with President Mugabe saying he is the only one with the power to stop the unilateral sacking of workers being done by companies countrywide.

Companies have capitalised on a recent Supreme Court judgement that firms could terminate contracts of employment upon issuing three months’ notice and thousands of workers have been sent packing since in the past one week.

Zimbabwe Federation of Trade Unions secretary general Mr Kennias Shamuyarira said Presidential Powers should evoked to end the “madness”.

“We have just met as a union and resolved that President Mugabe is the only one empowered to stop the ongoing onslaught,” he said.

“We cannot watch while more and more people are being sent home and we will use normal channels to get his attention. This flies in the face of Government plans and targets.”

Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions secretary general Mr Japhet Moyo said a stop gap measure was needed while the Labour Act was being amended.
