TWO teenagers drowned in a dam at Sodbury Farm in Inkomo on Monday morning while following a duck they had pelted.

Police say they are receiving an average of four drowning cases almost every week.

The bodies of the two (whose names were still being withheld),  aged 18 and 19 , were retrieved by police.

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed the incident.

“The incident occurred at around 10am when the two men aged 18 and 19 went to the dam at the farm where they pelted a duck.
“The duck flew to the centre of the dam and they followed it resulting with one of them drowning,” she said.

The other teenager followed trying to rescue his colleague but also drowned.

Their bodies were later seen by passersby who informed the police.

“The ZRP would like to warn members of the public to desist from playing in water bodies or crossing rivers where they are not sure of the volume of water,” Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.

“An average of four cases of drowning are received almost every week making this a cause of concern. Parents are also urged to monitor their children so that they do not play in or near water bodies.”

Cases of drowning tend to increase in Zimbabwe during the rainy season.
