An unlicensed kombi driver who attempted to run over a police officer at a roadblock along Lyton Road in Harare has been banned from driving commuter omnibuses for life. Dennis Manyuchi (24) was also sentenced by a Mbare Magistrate to 12 months in prison for driving without a licence, of which three months were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour.

Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba yesterday confirmed that they arrested Manyuchi last week and he was sent to court where he was convicted.

“On the second count, the accused was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment for contravening the Road Traffic Act Chapter 13:11 for reckless driving,” she said.

“He was prohibited from driving commuter omnibuses for life.”

Snr Asst Comm Charamba urged the public to comply with police officers’ instructions when ordered to stop at a roadblock.

“They should obey traffic rules and regulations at all times,” she said.

“The public can report any errant drivers to their nearest police station or can contact the National Complaints Desk on (04) 703631.”

In March, an unlicensed commuter omnibus driver who hit a Guard Alert security guard after failing to observe a give way sign was sentenced to one year and eight months in jail.

Shawn Masakure (24) of Overspill in Epworth, Harare, pleaded guilty to two counts of driving without a licence and negligent driving.

He appeared before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo, who sentenced him to three years in jail, but 16 months were suspended on condition that in the next five years Masakure does not commit a similar offence.
