Harare City Council has raked in $374 290 from parking fines issued to commuter omnibus and pirate taxi operators in August alone, according to figures released by the city communications department yesterday.
The city said it raised the amount from fines imposed on 1 875 commuter omnibuses and pirate taxis that were impounded for flouting parking regulations.
Traffic offences committed by the vehicle owners included picking and dropping off passengers at undesignated points, popularly known in the industry as “mishikashika”.

In the first week of September, the council impounded 475 vehicles and raised $72 290.
Council is working in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Republic Police to ensure the banishment of repeat offenders from the city.
