JOHANNESBURG.
Kaizer Chiefs’ Knowledge Mu-sona bagged his second South Afri-can Premier Soccer League Player of the Month award in a row.
The Zimbabwean striker was yesterday named the winner for December/January, following up on his October/November Player of the Month award.
Musona, the judges felt, kept Amakhosi in the League title race with some crucial goals.
“He is a true predator in front of goal, but he has also set up a nu-mber of goals for his teammates. He has become a real team player and that should be truly celebrated,” said the judges.
Lehlohonolo Majoro of Ama-Zulu and Thulani Serero of Ajax Cape Town were the other nominees for the award.
However, Musona admits he didn’t expect it.
“I never expected to win this one, but it is the judges who chose me,” he said.
Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns caretaker coach Ian Gorowa says Nyasha Mushekwi is doing a great job for the Brazilians in the absence of Katlego Mphela. The Zimbabwean striker scored a brace against Santos on Sunday to help the Brazilians climb into second spot in the log – in the process negating the absence of Awol striker Katlego Mphela.
“Every coach would like to have Mphela because he is a very good player. However, Mushekwi and Khenyeza have since stepped in and I am very happy with the contribution they have made, and especially by Mushekwi in scoring the two goals against Santos.”
Gorowa also told KickOff.com that he is ready to fill the void left by Antonio Lopez Habas, who resigned from Sundowns on Friday. The former Moroka Swallows coach has been given the coaching reins at Chloorkop until the end of the season.
Speaking after the game, Gorowa thanked club president Patrice Motsepe for the faith shown in him, but refused to make many promises to the club’s supporters. “The president has made it clear that I am in charge until the end of the season and at this moment I am prepared to work hard for the challenges lying ahead of me.
“I don’t want to make a lot of promises, but as a coach it is my duty to live up to expectations and lead a great team like Sundowns to success.”
Gorowa remains unfazed by the challenge being set by Orlando Pirates, whose 1-0 against Black Aces increased their lead at the top of the standings.
“It was important for us to win this game for two reasons. First, the result was important to motivate the players after the coach left and secondly, to stay in contention for the League title.
“There is still a long way to go and more games to be played and it is good that we are playing Pirates in our next match. It will give us a chance to close the gap.” — KickOff.
