Knife-wielding robbers jailed

Court Reporter
Three Harare men were on Thursday sentenced to five years in prison each after they were convicted by a Harare regional magistrate of robbing a motorist of his motor vehicle, cash and other valuables.

Elvis Kunaka (22), Learnmore Matiyenga (20) and Noel Pedzisai (27) appeared before Mr Adonia Ma- sawi.

The trio was sentenced to seven years in jail each but two years of the sentence were suspended on each sentence on condition of good behaviour.

In passing the sentence, Mr Masawi considered that the three were all first offenders who showed contrition by pleading guilty.

“You did not waste the court’s time by admitting to the offence you committed,” he said. “However, you deprived the person of their motor vehicle, which is a valuable asset, mobile phone and cash, hence you have to be punished for what you did.”

Mr Masawi said that the three were able-bodied men capable of finding honest means of living.

Facts are that on April 23 this year, the trio hired Godknows Saunyama to be ferried to Budiriro 3 shops in the city.

Along the way, one of the three grabbed Saunyama from the back and produced a knife threatening to kill him if he resisted.

They tied up Saunyama and later dumped him in Glen View 1.

The trio stole Saunyama’s Toyota Raum (registration number ADQ 8622), a mobile phone and cash amounting to $3.

Mr Liberty Gono prosecuted.
