MY African Athlete of the Week is Rebekah Oberholzer, a BMX rider from Zimbabwe. Rebekah has recently won Zimbabwe’s Junior Sportsperson of the Year for 2014 because of her outstanding achievements this year. Becky turned seven in October and is on her way to an exciting 2015. The major events that she is hoping to travel to next year are the European Cup in April, and then later in the year the World Championships in Zolder, Belgium. She will also compete all the local events throughout the year.

Her main goal is to try and defend her title at the world championships in 2015.

I asked her to comment on winning the award and this is what she had to say:

“I am very grateful for all the support and encouragement I have received in Zimbabwe, and I hope more girls will start competing in BMX — it is after all an Olympic sport!”

Becky would also like to wish everyone a wonderful Christmas and fantastic fun-filled New Year!

Congratulations Becky, keep it up!
