NAIROBI. — Kenyan police yesterday launched investigations into Monday’s fatal counter-terror drill, which left at least one university staff member dead and more than 20 others injured after causing panic at the institution. Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett said the Police Internal Affairs Unit will look into the role of the security officers in planning and executing the chaotic Strathmore University mock drill. “Investigations are underway to establish the circumstances in which the exercise went wrong resulting in death and injuries sustained,” Boinett told journalists in Nairobi.

He said the drill was aimed at disaster preparedness, and not carelessly allowing opportunities for actual disaster as witnessed in the Monday case.

“Security drill on disaster preparedness is a very highly professional activity and must follow protocol on modalities of authorisation,” Boinnet said.— Xinhua.
