THE ZIMBABWE Sevens rugby side, the Cheetahs, still have a lot of work to do if their dream of making it for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games is to become a reality following their below-par performance in Kenya over the weekend.

Yesterday the Cheetahs finished fourth at the Kenya Safari Sevens tournament after they were dominated by the Kenyan sides, first losing to the Morans (Kenya’s developmental side) before the Kenya senior side bungled them out in the semis. Unfortunately, the Cheetahs had to play the rest of the tournament without captain Hilton Mudariki, who tore a hamstring just in the first game of the tournament and had to watch the rest of the event from the terraces.

On Saturday, the Cheetahs fell 10-12 to the Morans in their opening game of the two-day competition but went on to win the remaining two group games against Uganda (26-10) and Samurai (17-5).

This performance saw them finishing second in Pool C, to make it to the quarter-finals where they got the better of Spain with a 14-10 win to set up a date against the Kenya senior side — Shujaa — in the semi-finals.
