The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWA) has accused Harare City Council of burying people on space reserved for provincial heroes at Warren Hills in Harare.

In an interview yesterday, ZNLWA Harare provincial secretary for information and publicity Cde William Matenga said 30 illegal graves were on the provincial shrine.

Cde Matenga said ZNLWA has since written to the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing.

The letter saw a delegation from the ministry, council and ZNLWA touring the shrine.

“At least 30 graves were on the provincial shrine side, taking space meant for burying our liberation war veterans,” said Cde Matenga.

He said Government has since directed City of Harare to stop the encroachments.

“We resolved that war veterans provincial offices be built at the shrine which will have information on the history of the country and the contributions of all freedom fighters buried at the shrine.

“This will keep history preserved,” he said.

Efforts to get a comment from Harare City Council principal communications officer Mr Michael Chideme were fruitless yesterday.
