LONDON. — Jose Mourinho has left deadline day signing Papy Djilobodji out of Chelsea’s Champions League squad. The 26-year-old defender joined the Blues in a £3 million deal from Nantes and was seen as a much-needed alternative after the failed pursuit of John Stones.

But Mourinho still seems to be unhappy with his options at centre back and Djilobodji has been omitted from their list for the UEFA competition.

All Champions League clubs were told to include a minimum of eight “locally trained players” on their submitted A list, which has a 25-man limit.

However, Chelsea have fewer than eight so their maximum squad size was reduced accordingly.

Summer signings Pedro, Radamel Falcao, Asmir Begovic and Baba Rahman have all been included, but Chelsea were effectively left to pick two out of three players to complete their number.

And Bertrand Traore and Kenedy have been given the nod at Djilobodji’s expense.

Youngsters Jamal Blackman and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are included in the Blues’ squad, with the latter matching the age requirements to be eligible for the B list.

Djilobodji was delighted to sign for the Blues and though he knew he would be a back-up at Stamford Bridge, the news of his omission will be a major blow for the player.

The Senegalese international was also linked with moves to Crystal Palace, QPR and Celta Vigo in the transfer window and reports in France suggested Mourinho didn’t know who he was when the Chelsea hierarchy made their move.

Chelsea are joined by Dynamo Kiev, Porto and Maccabi Tel Aviv in Group G, and welcome the Isreali side to west London for their first game on September 16.

Manchester City have also been forced to leave striker Kelechi Iheanacho out of their Champions League squad.

The 18-year-old Nigerian has not been named in the 21-man squad City submitted to — and now published by — European governing body UEFA, because it already includes the maximum 17 foreign players.

Iheanacho has been elevated to the first-team squad by manager Manuel Pellegrini this season and made a brief substitute appearance in Saturday’s Barclays Premier League win over Watford.

But he will have to wait for a Champions League chance. City can supplement their squad from a ‘B’ list of Under 21 players, but Iheanacho, who joined the club last year, does not qualify for that category until he has been at the club two years.

City could have named up to 25 players on their “A” list, but have not filled up the quota. The 17 foreign players are joined by Englishmen Joe Hart, Fabian Delph and Raheem Sterling, and Gael Clichy, who also counts as homegrown.

Meanwhile, Arsene Wenger has rewarded Jeff Reine-Adelaide for his promising performances in pre-season by including the French youngster in Arsenal’s Champions League squad.

The 17-year-old, signed from Lens in the summer, dazzled at the Emirates Cup in July. And although he hasn’t made an outing for the senior side as of yet, he has been selected in the Gunners’ “A list” for the competition.

Arsenal have included a maximum of 25 players in their A list, while also placing seven players on their B list.

Deyan Iliev, Hector Bellerin, Tafari Moore, Stefan O’Connor, Glen Kamara, Alex Iwobi and Chris Willock are in that group because of their age and length of time at the Emirates.

Reine-Adelaide was only eligible for the A list as he has only just moved to England. One man to miss out on a place in the squad is Polish teen Krystian Bielik, who signed for the club in January.

Summer signing Petr Cech — Arsenal’s only Champions League winner in the current squad — makes the cut along with Joel Campbell and Mathieu Flamini, who were linked with moves away this summer.

Reine-Adelaide meanwhile could get to display his talent in Europe’s leading competition for the first time, with Arsenal drawn in Group F alongside Bayern Munich, Olympiacos and Dinamo Zagreb.

They begin their quest for glory in Croatia on September 16. And Manchester United’s Champions League squad has also been announced — and David de Gea is in it.

The Spanish goalkeeper, whose move to Real Madrid sensationally collapsed on deadline day sparking a war of words between the two clubs, takes his spot in a list of 26.

But there is no place for fellow stopper Victor Valdes, who has fallen out with manager Louis van Gaal and would now seem to be on his way out of Old Trafford.

Anthony Martial, a £36m deadline day signing from Monaco, makes the cut, as do youngsters Andreas Pereira and Jesse Lingard. There are also spots for forgotten men Nick Powell and Guillermo Varela.

De Gea (24) was set to move to the Spanish giants after they made a bid on Monday’s European deadline which was accepted by United.

However, Real did not manage to file paperwork for the deal, which included Costa Rica keeper Keylor Navas heading in the opposite direction, in time and it did not go through.

The La Liga club issued a statement pointing the finger at United who responded with a robust dismissal and counter claim, leaving De Gea in limbo.

Sources in the De Gea camp have told Sportsmail he will return to the club following international duty and attempt to win his place back after Van Gaal claimed he was not focussed on the job and vowed not to pick him before September 1. And it would appear the Dutchman is intending to reinstate him after the squad list appeared on the Uefa website.

Former Barcelona keeper Valdes, who signed on a free transfer in 2014, is understood to be happy to try and put his differences with Van Gaal aside.

However, his omission from the squad would suggest he has no future at United.

The inclusion of the likes of Powell and Varela hints at a lack of depth to the club’s squad. — Mailonline.
