Nineteen-year-old law student Tafadzwa Jaricha was on Friday crowned Miss University of Zimbabwe queen at a glamorous event held at Mount Pleasant Hall. Jaricha was crowned queen after she shrugged off stiff competition from other 11 beautiful girls. Chiedza Chinake and Sthemiso Sweswe were crowned first and second princess respectively.

The event, which was graced by musicians Ammara Brown, Cynthia Mare, BaShupi and other upcoming artistes, saw the queen walking away with make-up vouchers courtesy of Black Opal Zimbabwe, beauty hampers from Vaida, movie tickets from Ster-Kinekor Borrowdale, lunch vouchers from Alo Alo and a gift voucher for a day trip from Nyati Travel among others.

In an interview with The Herald Entertainment after being crowned the queen Jaricha said she felt honoured and promised to work on reducing the high rate of domestic violence.

“The society today is experiencing a high rate of domestic violence. My dream is to reduce the rate of domestic violence by emancipating the society through the awareness campaign, supporting the anti-violence campaign,

“I also want to promote solid waste management to fulfil EMA’s vision of a healthy, clean environment that promotes the growth of the economy and empowers the society,’’ she said.

Meanwhile, the vice president of the organising team, Rotaract Club, Shamiso Mangwengwende said she was grateful that the event was successful and that they managed to raise funds for Chinyaradzo Children’s Home.

“It was an amazing event for us. This is the first time we have done it off the campus, so we are very happy with how it turned out and we are glad that we were able to raise some money for our charity this year at Chinyaradzo Children’s Home,” she said.

Ammara and Mare spiced up the event with well polished acts while BaShupi, who was a surprise act, also did not disappoint as he was in a celebratory mood.

The winners are set to represent the University of Zimbabwe at the Miss Universities to be held later this year.
