He was hit with a flurry of criticism on social media after his not-so-tuneful performance of the national anthem before Saturday night’s “fight of the century”.And Jamie Foxx got a chance to explain the awkward incident when he sat down with Ellen DeGeneres for Tuesday’s episode of her chat show.

The 47-year-old actor said: “Now some people were a little upset about how it went down. But here’s the thing first of all, anytime a black person sings the national anthem you know we gotta — Oh sayyyyyyy can youuououou.

‘‘I mean that’s just, ya know. But what did happen in the ring my ears came out. My inner ears.

‘‘My inner ears came out and I’m singing with an organ so I can’t hear what the organ is doing with the big crowd.’’

He added of the moment he belted out The Star-Spangled Banner in front of a star-studded audience at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

‘‘So some of it was a little off, but in the arena it killed. The telecast was a little off. But ya know we still love America!’’

The “Django Unchained” star also spoke to Access Hollywood about his off-key performance, saying: “We had a little bit of a situation with our ear pieces.”

The actor also said he was ignoring all the negativity surrounding the incident: ‘‘I think, a little bit was just people wanted to have something to talk about’’

Foxx got a less than rousing response to his performance before Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao took to the ring.

Twitter lit up with people who couldn’t quite believe what they had just heard and accused Foxx of ‘‘murdering’’ the national anthem.

‘‘Jamie Foxx killed the national anthem. And by killed it I mean it was like road kill,’’ tweeted @dbeltwrites.

‘‘Wonder if either of the fighters can stand as much punishment as Jamie Foxx just handed out to the national anthem?’’ asked @TheMangoose69.

User @petershankman wrote: ‘‘Currently launching a Kickstarter to pay Jamie Foxx to never sing in public again.’

Meanwhile, more mainstream media joined in the Foxx bashing with music channel VH1 describing what the Annie star had just unleashed on the world on pay-per-view as “very cringe worthy.’’ — dailymail.
