One thing which most kids love, on the calendar is the August holiday which has a lot of activities.
Among them is the Harare Agricultural Show now already in full swing running under the theme, “Zim Asset, Sustaining and Transforming Agricultural Growth,”With just three days since it began, somehow there is low activity as most parents prefer to go with their kids for security reasons. Like the norm, drum majorettes, pied pipers, clowns, face painting and horse riding among others have been the favourites for many kids at this year’s show.

The Luna Park popularly known as the ‘Amusement Park’ has come and some new little rides have been introduced. The jumping castles have been the jungle of fun.

Not to be left out is the Animal Farm which has made the HAS popular. A visit by CLS to some of the stands has revealed that some stakeholders have children at heart as they have designed their stands colourful and easy to understand the concept.

So far the Zimbabwe Defence Forces stand proved to be worthwhile as many kids flocked at their stand with some children participating at some of the demonstrations.

Though the show, has received mixed feelings from children in particular as they said it is not growing, alas it is just been three days let’s wait for some more action packed, hello. Funny enough it is 10 days of fiesta and some teenagers who spoke to CLS expressed their excitement over the HAS saying that it is the time for amusement.

“I have been going to the show for the past six years with my family. My favourite is the ZNA stand but so far I have noticed that many kids these days are no longer enjoying the show because it is somehow losing its shine. Gone are the days we so loved watching the animal farm, at least if they do something on games maybe they can win our hearts back,” said Theresa (17) from Hillside.

Asked which games, especially girls would want to see at HAS to make it more interesting, she said games like dominos, play stations, candy crushes, doll dance or shoot to win among others. She later highlighted that the 10-day period is somehow too long for fun.

Another teen show goer Brighton Marodza from Warren Park said was happy with the 10-day period as it gives more platforms to showcase talents.

“I think we have been given a chance to shine at the show. Comparing it with HIFA, it only targets the up market class but HAS is for us from the high density suburbs. We have the chance to mingle and have fun compared to the HIFA as it is too English for us,” said Brighton.

He said likes much of the fireworks display and the police display.

“I never miss the fireworks display though sometimes I watch them from home. Since we were kids, we all remember the joy and excitement of the show: the colourful clothing, the live music and the sweet smell of cotton candy. Although times have changed, HAS is still a source of enjoyment for many,” he said.
