Soccer is a great game, and the rich variety of styles and passions that come with being truly global makes the World Cup a nonpareil event in the universe of competitive sport.

For some teenagers soccer provides so many emotions, a different feeling every day.

This is the case with DilIian Munashe Chipunza, a Zimbabwean born soccer star based in the United Kingdom who has had the good fortune to take part in major competitions and playing for Fulham junior team which he said has created unforgettable moments.

CLS caught up with the soccer player who is in Zimbabwe for a holiday.

The 16-year old football protégé said soccer is part of his life.

“I started playing soccer at the age of seven.

“I was born in Harare and later moved to the United Kingdom. I play on position 10, central midfielder- the attacking role.

“Playing for Fulham has developed my football career and it’s a great experience,” he said.

Dillian said he was inspired by his older brother Tatenda after seeing him playing for ICA.

“My role model is my brother who had played for Petersbrough District League, ICA in the UK. He is my manager and I like his dribbling skills. I am the next Diego Maradonna,” he said.

Dillian said he would like to play for the Zimbabwe national team if given a chance.

“I am Zimbabwean and love my country very much. I do wish to play for Zimbabwe and with my skills that I have acquired abroad. I would like to gain experience with the Warriors.

“I will come back after I finish schooling then join some of the local teams,” he said.

The teen player is enrolled at Harris Academy Mertom, studying business, ICT, religion and philosophy.

He emphasised on how local soccer clubs can boost teen confidence and develop their careers.

“Soccer clubs are in a unique position to combat what is now considered a health crisis.

“Soccer offers individuals of all ages the opportunity to engage in regular exercise through structured programmes and within a social network. The sport can also help children develop skills and habits that can lead to a healthier adulthood.

“By having practice sessions which usually involve components of fitness (running), strength training (stopping, starting and cutting manoeuvres) and motor skill development (ball control), soccer also provides a social network for those involved,” he said.
