A press conference called by the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs in Zimbabwe (SCIAZ) to discuss steps taken to address the El Nino-induced hunger disaster last week turned chaotic due to internal power struggles.

Imam Ishmail Duwa, who is claiming to be the organisation’s national chairman, gatecrashed the meeting handing his own Press statement to journalists after SCIAZ national chairman Sultan Adam Salamu had issued his statement.

Imam Duwa accused the organisation’s members of being corrupt, saying he would hold a similar Press conference.

In a statement, SCIAZ national chairman Salamu said the organisation expelled Duwa as deputy chairperson of SCIAZ in August last year.

“SCIAZ wishes to take this opportunity to inform the nation that Imam Ishmail Duwa was expelled from the Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs in Zimbabwe as its deputy national chairman on 1 August, 2015 for insubordination and erratic behaviour, according to the organisation’s constitution and code of conduct,” he said.
