Legislator gets death threats

Herald Reporters

ZANU-PF House of Assembly Member for Chakari Cde Zacharia Ziyambi has received death threats from suspected MDC-T legislators following the successful adoption of a notice to move a motion denouncing the illegal economic sanctions on Thursday.

The motion calls on Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai and his deputy Arthur Mutambara to engage the United States, European Union and other Western countries to remove the illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe at their instigation.

Cde Ziyambi seconded the motion, which Mwenezi East House of Assembly representative Cde Kuda-kwashe Bhasikiti (Zanu-PF) had first attempted to move on Wednesday.

The same night, Cde Ziyambi started receiving calls from suspected MDC-T legislators who said he should not back the motion or die.

A report was made at Harare Central Police Station (Initial Report number 020373).

Harare provincial police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau yesterday said investigations were ongoing and no arrests had been made.

In an interview yesterday, Cde Ziya-mbi said he started receiving the threatening calls soon after Wednes-day’s parliamentary sitting.

Cde Bhasikiti failed to successfully give his notice to move the motion after rowdy MDC-T legislators disrupted the proceedings.

"On Wednesday night I received a call from one of the (MDC-T) legislators saying me and Cde Bhasikiti were the brains behind the motion and we should withdraw it," Cde Ziyambi said.

He said he challenged the caller to identify himself.

A few minutes later, Cde Ziyambi

says he received another call from another suspected MDC-T legislator who again threatened him.

"On Thursday at around 9:50am, I received another phone call from the (same) legislator informing me that we should withdraw our motion," said Cde Ziyambi.

He says a colleague advised him that he was under surveillance by MDC-T- aligned individuals and his life was in danger.

Cde Ziyambi reported the matter to the police yesterday afternoon.

He said he was making frantic efforts to warn Cde Bhasikiti, who is believed to be in Chiredzi.

Cde Ziyambi has written to Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri, Commander of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces General Constantine Chiwenga and the director of the Central Intelligence Organisation Retired Major-General Happyton Bonyongwe informing them about the threats.

Cde Ziyambi has sought State protection until investigations are complete.

He vowed to continue agitating for the lifting of the illegal sanctions.

The sanctions motion will be debated anytime from now.
