The truck driver who allegedly delivered toxic sodium cyanide to Harare’s main waterworks, has been arrested. Simon Demhe was arrested over the weekend. He was yesterday brought to court accused of

contravening provisions of the Water Act and the Environmental Management Act.
Demhe (42) was not formally charged when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Anita Tshuma who remanded him out of custody to September 17 on US$1 500 bail.

He was also ordered to report three times a week at CID Law and Order section and not to interfere with State witnesses.

According to the State, Demhe is employed by Astra Transport Bulawayo as a truck driver and is trained in handling hazardous chemicals and is responsible for transportation of goods locally and within the Sadc region.

Prosecutor Ms Fransica Mukumbiri alleged that on July 16 Demhe left Beira, Mozambique, for Zimbabwe with a CureChem Overseas Private Ltd consignment of 19 580kg of sodium cyanide.
It is further alleged the consignment was cleared into Zimbabwe at Forbes Border Post, Mutare, by both Zimbabwe Revenue Authority and Environmental

Management Agency officials since he was carrying a harmful chemical to both humans and the environment.
The chemical is imported into Zimbabwe mainly for gold processing in a process called cyanidation.

He arrived at Pairtrade Investmnet on the same day where he handed over the Bill of Entry documents to his manager Farai Muchenje who has already appeared in court on the same allegations.

On July 20, the two allegedly conspired to deliver the toxic substance to Morton Jaffray waterworks instead of delivering the correct substance.
