HWANGE Colliery Company Limited managing director Mr Fred Moyo could be on his way out of the coal giant as his contract is due to expire at the end of this month, sources at the company said yesterday.
But his contract could be extended, as negotiations to that effect are reportedly underway with the board.
“Mr Moyo joined Hwange in 2007 and his contract expires at the end of this month. However, there is room to extend the contract for another five years and negotiations with the board are underway,” said the source.
Hwange spokesperson Mr Burzil Dube promised to issue an official statement yesterday but had not done so by the time of going to print. Hwange board chairman Mr Farai Mutamangira was said to be out of the country on business.
Mr Moyo, a veteran miner, has close to 30 years’ experience in the industry. He started his career in 1982, as a graduate learner with the coal mine when it was still Wankie Colliery Company, then run by Anglo-American Corporation.
After completion of his learnership, he was appointed shift boss and later mine captain before being promoted to planning engineer, a position he held until he was elevated to underground mine manager in 1986.
He had a one-year stint with South Africa’s Anglo Coal between 1988 and 1989 where he was on attachment to gain more knowledge and experience in coal mining.
He left Hwange in 2001 to join Shabanie and Mashaba Mine Holdings as general manager for its Gaths Mine in Mashava.
In 2004, he joined Bindura Nickel Corporation as the managing director, a position he held for three years before he resigned to rejoin Hwange.
Mr Moyo is a graduate of Leeds University in the United Kingdom, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Honours degree in Mining Engineering.
He is the past president of the Zimbabwe Mine Managers’ Association and also past senior vice-president of the Chamber of Mines.
Mr Moyo is a former board member of Zimbabwe Iron and Steel Company, now New Zimsteel, and Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation.
He is a non-executive director of Zimchem Refineries (Pvt) Limited, Clay Products (Pvt) Limited and Hwange Coal Gasification.
