Zimbabwe has been selected as the best African destination for the recording of a top German reality show owing to its unique scenery, flora and fauna all encapsulated in the majestic Victoria Falls.
This seal of approval was granted by German’s top entertainment television station, Redseven, who recently visited the country on a scouting mission.
The reality television documentary started recording on June 9 and will run up to June 24 2012.
Zimbabwe was endorsed after rigorous and strict selection criteria that took into account the uniqueness of the tourist offering, community tourism, availability of natural tourist options and culture, among other things.
The reality documentary titled “Million Dollar Model” will be aired on Redseven TV starting from September, and has over five million viewers in Austria, Germany and Switzerland.
Commenting on the development, the chief executive of the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority Karikoga Kaseke said the project by Germans for Germans will put the country under the spotlight and further market the destination particularly the Victoria Falls as a rare spectacle.
“We are excited about this project poised to portray the attractiveness of this destination and given the latest thumbs-up by Germans themselves, 2012 is projected to witness a 9 percent increase in arrivals from this top spending primary source market,” said Kaseke.
The production of the reality film is expected to further complement ZTA’s efforts in marketing and promoting Zimbabwe’s premier tourist resorts in Europe which contributed about 6 percent of the overall tourism arrivals to Zimbabwe in 2011 with Germany coming second after UK.
German arrivals buoyed by 44 percent in 2011 from 16 910 to 24 300.
Apart from Zimbabwe, “The Million Dollar Model” documentary also includes top destinations like Iceland and Israel. The choice of Zimbabwe ahead of other destinations further confirms the increasing popularity of Zimbabwe’s tourism worldwide.
The reality TV documentary primes the country for more tourists and shows the country’s readiness to host the forthcoming 20th session of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation General Assembly in August 2013. Already the country has successfully hosted the 37th edition of Africa Travel Association Conference in Victoria Falls at a time it has also received the highest order of recognition for tourism development through the conferment of the African Tourism Ambassadorial status to President Mugabe by the UNWTO late last month.
