Refuse collection in Harare is expected to improve following an approval by council to buy 27 refuse compactors and four skip bin trucks at a cost of US$6 million. This means the city will have 47 refuse compactors, implying that each of the city’s 46

wards will have a refuse truck.

The city has 20 refuse trucks and three skip bin trucks at the moment.
Director of waste management, Mr Dombo Chibanda, said the additional trucks will ensure that each ward had a dedicated truck.

The approval to buy the trucks comes amid complaints by residents of western suburbs that the city was not collecting garbage while the councillors were panicking that elections due anytime will be held when they have a very poor service delivery track record.
The residents have resorted to burning garbage but have in the process cause pollution.
