Agriculture Reporter A South African contractor is involved in a dispute with his workers who are accusing him of beating and verbally abusing them at Glenara Estates near Harare. HCK Construction manager, Mr Hendrick Strydom popularly known as “Ngamura” is accused of beating his workers over trivial issues. HCK Construction is contracted by Glenara Estates to build poultry houses under the farm’s US$2 million project. One of the affected workers, Mr Fanuel Tiriboy said their boss was in the habit of shouting at workers and sometimes did not pay them. “I had to resign because of the ill-treatment. He paid us US$6 per day but he only gave me US$20 after working for 10 days,” he said. Another worker only identified as Temba who was brought to Zimbabwe from South Africa by Strydom said he now wants to go back home, as he cannot stand the ill treatment. “He beats me and my workmates. This has become his habit and I can no longer continue suffering.” Mr Strydom denied that he was in the habit of beating up his workers, but admitted that he had squabbles with Temba and Mr Tiriboy. |
