IN-FORM Zimbabwe international striker Evans Rusike struck a brace to power Maritzburg United to the top of the South African Premiership table after they beat Ajax Cape Town 2-0 at the Harry Gwala Stadium last night.

The Zimbabwean hitman, who scored when his team beat African champions Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 Cup, opened the scoring on the half-hour mark, nodding home a cross from Bandile Shandu.Tashreeq Morris thought he had equalised in the 54th minute, but his effort was chalked off for an adjudged foul on goalkeeper Bongani Mpandle.

Rusike then got his second goal in the 68th minute with a composed finish, having also netted in the club’s 1-0 win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the MTN8 quarter-finals.

United, who share the summit with Cape Town City with six points from two matches, have picked up from where they left off under coach Fadlu Davids last season.

Former Warriors captain Willard Katsande and his Kaizer Chiefs teammates crashed to a 1-2 defeat at the hands of a SuperSport United who have Zimbabwean coach Kaitano Tembo in its coaching staff.

There were ugly scenes at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg as Chiefs fans called for the dismissal of coach Steve Komphela after the Amakosi’s latest defeat. — Sports Reporter/Kick-Off
