THE Hwange Local Board is looking for investors keen to build a five-star hotel in the area, as the board seeks to apply for town status while augmenting accommodation for tourists visiting the nearby Victoria Falls. The board’s secretary Ndumiso Mdhlalose has already invited tenders to purchase the stand which is on a mountain overlooking the proposed civic centre site for Hwange, which is being developed.
“The successful tenderer is expected to purchase the stand which is 22 500 square metres at US$6 per square metre and develop the stand on an agreed time frame,” he said.

“Servicing costs are US$10 per square metre. The tenderer is also expected to come up with architectural designs of the hotel.”
Mr Mdhlalose described Hwange as “booming with coal mine activities” which are set to intensify with more than 20 special mining leases having been issued by Government.

“Besides being the coal town that Hwange is, the town is situated right in the middle of Hwange National Park, home to the big five and is the nearest town to the entry points to the National Park, Sinamatela and Main Camp.

“To this end, infrastructure to service the tourists and business visitors is in great demand.”
Hwange is situated in the midst of Africa’s largest coal bed and is surrounded by coal mining giants, Hwange Colliery, Makomo Resources, Coal Brick Mine and the new Chilota Colliery .

It is home to the biggest thermal power station in the country which is set to expand under a US$2 billion expansion project.
The Hwange Local Board is in the process of allocating stands at its proposed civic centre site.

The board is also contemplating to have an investment conference to lure corporate and affluent businesspersons to put up infrastructure in the CBD.

It also plans to approach institutes such as Old Mutual, who are leaders on the property market, and South African investors, to market the proposed civic centre.

A civic centre is a prominent land area within a community that is constructed to be its focal point or centre.
It usually contains one or more dominant public buildings, which may also include a Government building and it is usually constructed or maintained by municipal funds.
