THE domestic rugby season gets underway today at Old Georgians Sports Club when the first event of the local rugby calendar — the Sevens Summer Series — kicks off. This will also be the first time explosive pint-sized winger Stephan Hunduza features in the red-and-white colours of Old Georgians having crossed the great divide from city rivals Harare Sports Club last month.

The hosts, playing in this tournament as Dragons, will also enjoy the company of Malawi-based Jacques Leitao, who is also the Cheetahs captain, on a day that will be dominated by schools Sevens teams.

Sixteen schools teams have been included and have been divided into four groups of four with Prince Edward, St John’s College, Churchill and Mbare Academy being the top seeds.

Others include Kuwadzana High, Mbare High, Tafara High, Ellis Robins, Vainona, and Watershed College come into the event as the only school from outside Harare.

The schools will open the show with games on the main field starting at 9am while the main club games will start at 11:40am.

However, much of the attention will be focused on the club Sevens, where teams will showcase some of their new acquisitions but it is Old Georgians who have had the best buy so far in the form of Hunduza.

Some of the names that OGs have managed to retain in their squad include Graham Kaulback, Rous Boyd and Fortunate Chipendu who have all played for the Cheetahs while Hunduza, Tafadzwa Mukonyora, Jacques van der Bergh and Tendai Karikoga are making their debut appearances for the Dragons.

The Dragons are also the defending champions having won several Summer Series events over the years.

There will be more is at stake with players hoping to impress the Cheetahs selection panel led by coach Daniel Hondo in preparation for the Hong Kong World Series core qualifier tournament next month.
