A 39-year-old Beatrice man on Monday allegedly killed his wife by slitting her throat with a kitchen knife before cutting his throat with the knife following a domestic dispute. Acting Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nobert Muzondo said yesterday that investigations were in progress to ascertain facts surrounding the issue.

“We received a report following the death of Susan Kapachika (21) of Caroline Farm Compound who was killed by her husband Lazarous Kambirinyu following an unknown domestic dispute,” he said.

“Our preliminary investigations revealed that Kambirinyu also killed himself by cutting his throat with the same knife.”

It is alleged that on the fateful day at around 4pm, Kapachika went to her sister’s homestead Chipo (25) which was a few meters away from their homestead to fetch water after leaving Kambirinyu at home.

Police reports indicated that Kapachika returned home 10 minutes later and entered into the house.
It is alleged that after a short while Chipo heard Kapachika screaming for help, prompting her to rush to the scene to investigate. Upon arrival at Kapachika’s homestead, Chipo found the door locked, but managed to peep through the window where she saw Kambirinyu slitting Susan’s throat with a kitchen knife. Chipo allegedly rushed to her house and called her husband Isaac Manatsa who rushed to the scene and broke the window before entering the house.

It is alleged that when Manatsa entered the house he found Kapachika already dead lying down in a pool of blood and Kambirinyu lying in agony besides her, bleeding profusely from the neck.

Kambirinyu died a few minutes later.
A report was made and Beatrice police took the dead bodies to Beatrice Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem.
