Huawei launches latest smartphone

Huawei last week unveiled its latest smartphone which the group touts as the most user friendly smartphone for consumers globally.

At the event in Johannesburg last Thursday general manager of Huawei Consumer Business Group SA Ms Charlene Munilall said the P8 is a game changer and signals China’s assault on Tier One Android flagships.

The phone has a heavy emphasis on design following on the use of the P7s flat back approach. Huawei first announced the device, along with its larger sibling, the P8 Max, during a launch event in London in April 2015. It will, however, be launched in the eastern and southern Africa market around end July to early August at a price around the $680 region.

The P8 runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop modified with Huawei’s Emotion UI 3.1, and features a 5.2-inch full HD display, 2,680mAh battery, and 2GHz octa-core processor.

The P8 has a Sony-developed 13-megapixel RGBW sensor with a dedicated image processor and f/2 lens, which is designed to deliver better low light performance and noise reduction. The company also claims that the P8’s optical image stabilisation (OIS) is significantly better than the iPhone 6 Plus’. This is because the OIS unit on the P8 can handle up to 1.2 degrees of motion shift, compared to only 0.6 degrees on the iPhone 6 Plus. The OIS does decently in low light, helping to reduce camera shake in still images, but it also works very well during Full HD video recording at 30fps, keeping hand-held shots relatively stable

At launch, the Huawei P8 will be available in two colour options: “Mystic Champagne”, and “Titanium Grey”. Other colours will become available during the life cycle of the device.
