HOST school Hokonya Primary School dominated the Alfred Dongo Memorial tournament in Chivhu on Friday. The event, held in honour of the late Alfred Dondo who was the brother of Impala Car Hire services chief executive, Thompson Dondo, saw 12 schools taking part in three disciplines — soccer, netball and volleyball.

Thompson is also the former chief executive of Kiglon Football Club, which he used to fund together with his brother-in-law Arthur Chitunhu.

It was Hokonya who dominated the show at the weekend as they won gold medals in soccer and netball and were runners-up in volleyball where they were defeated by Madziire.

In netball, Hokonya beat Simukai in the final in a tightly-contested encounter. Hokonya beat Madziire 1-0 courtesy of a Jealous Madzvamuse strike and the 13-year-old went on to receive a sponsorship deal from guest of honour, Alois Bunjira, who has recruited him for his Albun Soccer Academy.

In netball, the team won 17-16 against Simukai.

“We have been working with this team for the past year and it is now starting to pay off. The kids now understand each other better and we hope we will have a strong side next year,” said coach Grace Mhande.

“I am also grateful to Dondo for this tournament.”

Madzvamuse, who lost his father at a tender age, said the scholarship could provide a stepping stone for him.

“I thank the organisers of the tournament and Bunjira who has taken such a huge responsibility to cater for my secondary education,” said Madzvamuse.

Sam Dondo offered entertainment to the crowd.
