NICE. — Roy Hodgson has paid the ultimate price for one of the biggest humiliations in England’s footballing history.

The England boss has stood down after the Euro 2016 defeat to minnows Iceland on Monday night.

Kolbeinn Sigthorsson and Ragnar Sigurdsson condemned England to the biggest upset since they lost to the United States in the 1950 World Cup.

It was a grim night which left Hodgson looking distraught on the touchline as the England fans could not believe what they were seeing in the Stade de Nice.

And at his post-match Press conference, Hodgson announced his resignation, along with assistants Ray Lewington and Gary Neville.

“I know we are in the results business. I’m extremely disappointed. We haven’t progressed as far in the competition as I thought we were capable of, and that’s obviously not acceptable.

“My contract was always up at the end of the Euros. We are out of the Euros so now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of a hungry and extremely talented group of players.

“They have done fantastically, and done everything asked of them. When I arrived I was told that players would not turn up or pull out at the last minute but I haven’t seen any of that. — The Mirror.
