There must be clear policy guidelines for adolescents living with HIV to help them easily access health services, cope with stigma and discrimination. Presenting results of a study on sexual and reproductive health rights for adolescents living with HIV in Southern Africa, Professor Simbarashe Rusakaniko said the majority of adolescents only knew of their status when they fell sick.

The University of Zimbabwe lead researcher said issues of disclosure, supports services after disclosure, knowledge on HIV and AIDS issues remained minimal for young people.

“Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) and HIV services should be fully integrated so as to ensure that adolescents living with HIV have access to SRH advice, counselling, appropriate prevention measures as well as safer sex and contraception,” said Prof Rusakaniko.

He said there was need to develop new gender and age sensitive strategies to address existing policy gaps.

Prof Rusakaniko said the study revealed that young people were uncomfortable seeking HIV services together with adults.

He suggested the establishment of anti-retroviral clinics for youths.

“A family centred approach is needed to ensure parents and guardians receive support, advice and training regarding adolescent disclosure and SRH needs,” he said.

Officiating at the meeting, Health and Child Care Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa pledged to look into the recommendations of the study.

“This study is pertinent. I totally support it. We will look at it and see how best we can incorporate your findings into our programming,” said Dr Parirenyatwa.
