Preparations for the Heroes Day and Defence Forces Day commemorations on August 11 and 12 are at an advance stage with Government urging Zimbabweans to turn out in great numbers at different venues throughout the country.Speaking at a press conference recently, Harare provincial administrator Mr Alfred Tome said various activities were lined up for the commemorations.

“We are fully prepared for Heroes Day, which is on the 11th of August and then the Defence Forces Day on the 12th of August,” he said. “We really want to celebrate, especially on our Heroes Day. We want to celebrate the good works that our fallen heroes did for us and also the good they did for Zimbabwe.” Mr Tome said Zimbabwe was now free and people could move freely and conduct business in a peaceful environment.

He said they had made arrangements to ensure that widows and widowers of departed heroes coming for the commemorations in Harare were hosted at Belvedere Teachers College after the Heroes Day ceremony. Mr Tome said on Defence Forces Day, 40 buses would ferry people to and from the National Sports Stadium.

He said the Zimbabwe Defence Forces soccer team would play against their Namibian counterparts while various artistes including Alick Macheso, Jah Prayzah and Sulumani Chimbetu, would entertain people.
