Nowadays it’s quite easy to succumb to life’s many pressures. To be the ultimate ‘golden child’, we are often required to be well-rounded children by our parents. To impress our friends, we often try to imitate the latest fashion trends and acquire the latest gadgets. Other aspects in life such as relationships and family problems can also make life difficult. Preparing for and writing school examinations are extra challenges.

All these things can be quiet stressful and some teenagers become depressed. Some teenagers try to relieve stress by taking drugs and alcohol. Others end up resorting to self harm to ease their stress. Self harm includes cutting oneself on the wrist or hand.

This is dangerous since it can lead to serious infections. This can result in bleeding, infections and scarring. However there are several healthy ways to beat the blues. When you encounter problems, you might feel as if there is no hope but there is a light at the end of every tunnel. Some tunnels just happen to be longer than others.

— It’s often best to confide in your parents or an adult that you trust. They have probably experienced some of your problems so they can offer you advice on how you can conquer your problems. Spend time with friends who uplift you. Stay away from people who make you feel insecure and who have negative attitude.

— Take walks with your pet so that you can get some fresh air. This can lighten up your mood. Play sports at school or a local sports club
— Participate in different enjoyable activities such as dancing, bike riding or karate.

— Each time when you feel like saying a negative thing about yourself says three positive things instead.

— Write your achievements and positive attributes about yourself and stick them around your room. Write your thoughts and feelings in a diary. Call Childline on 116 so that you can discuss your problems with a professional counsellor.
