Makomo Primary School headmistress Angeline Make was yesterday arraigned before the Harare Magistrates Court on allegations of defrauding the Epworth school of more than $88 000. She is a former head of the school in the sprawling settlement east of Harare.

Make (48), of number 63 North Road, Chisipite, now heads Lewisam Primary School in the same suburb. She appeared before magistrate Mr Tendai Mahwe charged with theft of trust property.

She pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded to May 19 on $100 bail. As part of her bail conditions, Make was ordered to surrender her passport to the Clerk of Court and to report once every Friday at CID serious frauds.

Make was also ordered to reside at the address she gave to the court.

Prosecutor Ms Idah Maromo alleged that between January and December 2013, Make, in connivance with former school bursar Ruth Ngunda, former deputy head Spiwe Murota, a former teacher only identified as Marevangepo, former School Development Committee member Shadreck Nkani and teacher-in-charge Loreta Mazemo, converted to their personal use $88 260. It is alleged that the money was meant for the development of Makomo Primary School.

The court heard that in a bid to conceal their criminal act, Make and her alleged accomplices originated fake receipts, altered invoices, quotations and payment vouchers purporting that the money was used towards school development.

It is the State’s case that the offence came to light when a new School Development Committee came into office in February 2014.

The court heard that upon going through the books and records, the committee discovered the anomalies and called for an audit.

The audit discovered that Make and her accomplices had forged receipts, invoices and payment vouchers to conceal the irregular outflow of funds to the prejudice of the school.
