The city is now mobilising funds to start the project. Another US$68 million has been budgeted for the expansion of existing sewage plants at Crowborough and Firle. But investigations show that even if the city expands the sewage plants and builds new ones — it would still face problems in the southern incorporated areas where over 60 million litres of sewage is generated on a daily basis.
Harare South suburbs are not connected to the city’s sewer lines and residents in the area use pit latrines while others use the bush system. The Lindhurst sewage treatment plant is expected to reduce pollution of Seke Dam and open the land around Donnybrook for city expansion.
Harare Water director Eng Christopher Zvobgo said the sewage plants should be in place ahead of the construction of Kunzvi Dam. The entire sewer reticulation system needs entire rehabilitation with at least 80 percent of it having gone beyond the 30-year life span. Eng Zvobgo said some segments of the sewer pipe works were completely corroded resulting in collapsed sewer lines.
“For sustainability we need to replace all pipes that have gone beyond their lifespan on a yearly basis. Our pipe replacement is lagging behind because of lack of funding,” he said.
Replacement of the pipes has been done on an adhoc basis in response to localised bursts.
