HARARE Region emerged the overall winners of the Zimbabwe Republic Police Central Investigations Department sports gala at Chinhoyi University of Technology over the weekend.

The sporting jamboree, which had over 150 participants, saw competitors battling it out in several disciplines which included football, basketball, volleyball and athletics.

It was Harare Region who made the biggest impact on the medals table despite stiff competition from their Southern and Northern counterparts.

The side from the capital bagged 13 gold, five silver and as many bronze medals. Southern Region finished second after capturing eight gold, 10 silver and five bronze.

Northern Region won eight gold, nine silver and five bronze.

The tournament’s main sponsor, Mike Chimombe, who is the Affirmative Action Group president for the Mashonaland West Chapter, said he was happy with the level of competition and urged other businessmen and companies to help bankroll tournaments of this nature since they help in the fight against crime.

“I am impressed with the way this gala unfolded,” he said.

“All the participants showed great passion for what they were doing. The level of competition was awesome and I should say I wouldn’t mind putting my money on it again.

“I would also want to urge other corporates and individuals to sponsor events of this nature to help in facilitating the mixing and mingling of security details and the general populace.”
