HARARE province says they are ready to host their Copa Coca-Cola Under-16 boys and Under-17 girls football tournament provincial finals today with the participating schools expected to converge at Prince Edward and Allan Wilson schools this morning.

Last year Harare hosted the national finals and they had four representatives — Churchill and Roosevelt, who were the hosting schools and then Oriel Boys and Vainona — who were the provincial winners in the boys and girls section respectively.

This year the national finals will be staged in Bulawayo from July 17 to 19 and all provinces are expected to host the provincial finals today with winners from each province progressing to the national event.

They will join defending champions Chemhanza in the boys section and Chidyamakono, the girls’ title holders, as well as the hosting schools Gifford and Montrose Girls High. Head in charge of soccer Harare province Ropafadzo Matemavi said everything was in place for today’s competition.

“We are ready, our preparations have gone very well and they have been thorough. Everything is now in place. We have managed to secure four playing fields at Prince Edward and then the other two at Allan Wilson.

“We had a meeting with all the participating teams where we spelt out all the requirements, that’s the documents.

“The boys Under-16 have to bring their Grade Seven results certificate to curb cheating. Schools have to bring team photos with names written in such a way that they can be identified and they should be stamped at district level.”

Last year’s provincial winners, Oriel Boys coach Shadreck Machihani is optimistic they will repeat the same feat to represent Harare in Bulawayo.

The boys section will see Churchill High, Tafara 1, Cranborne Boys, Oriel Boys, Dzivarasekwa 2 High, Zengeza 4, Lord Marlven Prince Edward and Glen View 2 fighting for the sole ticket to represent Harare at the national finals.

The girls section will feature Vainona High, Mufakose 2, Oriel Girls, Seke 1, Girls High, High, Mt Pleasant, Harare High and Mabelreign Girls.

Schools in Bulawayo will meet at Gifford and Mzilikazi while those in Masvingo will converge at Chibi High.

Matopo High will host schools from Matabeleland South and Chilisa is the place to be for participants from Matabeleland North.

In Midlands participating teams will be at Mandava and Zvishavane High while Mashonaland East schools host their finals at Assisi High and Madzivire.

Manicaland schools converge at Vengere and St Joseph’s.
