To define last week’s mood, I think the best to describe it was “happy” just like US rapper Pharell Willams once sang, “Because we are happy . . .” It was a splendid fair at RBZ Sports Club as George Emmanuel College (GEC) celebrated it’s one year anniversary. The function was graced by the parents of the children, musicians, students and children organisations among others who later took turns to give some testimonies on how the school has developed.

CLS was among the guests of honour at the themed blue and white event where students also took the opportunity to display their talent in the music and dance segment. On the entertainment scene, Lower Sixth student Mislet Gonya affectionately known as “Lil Missy Boss” put up a performance which would make even Nicki Minaj green with envy as she sailed well in her songs.

Lil Missy Boss made everyone dance as she warmed up the stage for artistes like Dozae XA, DJ Optimus, Zim Kings, Ngoni Kambarami and Stunner among others. The well decorated event had a three-tier vanilla cake decorated in college colours and the prefects board led in the toast with “Chamdor” – zero percent alcohol.

One thing to be recorded in the college’s history books was how touching the testimonies from students were. They all agreed on the same thing, that is the school’s academic success and that they were happy to learn there.

“Academic success is incredibly important at George Emmanuel College and our teachers do not measure success through extra curricular activities alone but much emphasis on what we become and achieve. We are taught integrity and for us it is doing the right thing at the right time,” said headboy Thulani Nyamapfeka.

“George Emmanuel has taught us to be cultural and respectful towards our teachers and students and we thank Aunt for a job well done. As the school continues to grow the children are being groomed in a cultural manner of respect towards parents and any adult who visits the institution and this is seen from the way that they receive and greet them,” he said.

Another student, Chenai Maneya, said the one year anniversary means a lot to them because they are the pioneers and their input will go a long way in developing the college.

“I love my college so well because it has taught me to be the girl I am. We are the pioneers and I respect each and everyone’s input which made it to be here where we are. This is indeed a milestone occasion for the college and still got a long way to go,” she said. Chenai said the one year anniversary signifies the movement of the college from point A to B.

“As we blow that candle, it is an opportunity for us to reflect on the changes that have taken place in the college for the past months – be this in terms of physical facilities, the way schools are organised or the programmes and pathways offered to our students. It is also an opportune moment for us to reflect on the fundamentals that have not changed, such as the inculcation of values and life-skills,” she said.

The event was also attended by officials from the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, diplomats and socialites.
