HOTELS and Leisure Africa occupancy has shot up to above 70 percent in the last two months from 40 percent in January

Chairman Cornelius Nyahunda said occupancy across the group’s hotels had improved since the turn of the year although there is room for more growth.

He said his leisure group has invested into the transformation of Cecil Hotel in Bulawayo which it took over in October last year.

“We have transformed Cecil Hotel from the almost brothel feel that it was to HALA Select Cecil Hotel, which has a two-star rating. What we are doing is creating low cost hotels which are accessible to the many business and conferencing travellers who need accommodation in the various administrative destinations,” said Mr Nyahunda.

The refurbished hotel has seen occupancy rising to 100 percent during last year’s Youth Games and expects full capacity during the forthcoming Zimbabwe International Trade Fair.

Last year, HALA signed a 10-year management contract with Chimanimani Hotel and Casino and injected about $500 000 for refurbishment of the leisure centre.

The group also manages Montclair and Casino, HALA Select Selous Hotel, Jacaranda City Lodge (Harare), Ochi Safaris and Events (Domboshava), Kimberly Select Hotel (Bindura) and Select Hotel in Karoi. Outside the country, HALA manages Afrikiko Riverfront Resort in Ghana and Vila de Macova in Mozambique together with HALA Premier at Oliver Tambo International Airport in South Africa.
