Gweru City Council has put its rapid response health team on high alert following reports of a typhoid outbreak in Harare. The local authority has also embarked on massive clean-up campaign, incorporating moving door-to-door reminding residents on the need to uphold hygienic standards. In an interview, Gweru Town Clerk Ms Elizabeth Gwatipedza said as part of improving health standards in the city, they have set aside $245 000 for the campaign including funding solid waste management.

“We want to make it a point that the city remains clean following reports of typhoid in other cities like Harare. We also want to purchase five skip bins which cost $5 000 each. These large containers will be used in waste collection,” she said. Ms Gwatipedza said the council intends to purchase one refuse truck.

“We also need one more refuse truck so as to improve on efficiency by keeping our city clean,” she said. Ms Gwatipedzwa said the council has also set aside $40 000 to manage the city’s dumpsite.
